Daily Market Report, JFD Research

US holidays often have a noticeable impact on market mechanics, liquidity, and volatility-more than many traders expect. Today’s Washington’s Birthday is an example of how trading conditions may differ between US and European market sessions, including reduced liquidity and potentially irregular price formation.

US holidays are not a footnote for traders but a relevant factor in market structure and price formation. On days such as Washington’s Birthday, US equity markets are closed, while bond markets are either closed or trading only on a limited basis. As a result, overall liquidity—especially in US-related assets-declines significantly and bid-ask spreads may widen even during seemingly calm market conditions. This may result in orders being executed at less favourable prices or not executed at all, increasing trading costs and potential losses, particularly in leveraged instruments such as CFDs.

Under such conditions, price movements may occur more rapidly but with reduced reliability. Breakouts during US holidays may show limited continuation as institutional participation and trading volume are reduced. Automated and manual orders may react to small order flows, occasionally producing irregular price movements. This can increase execution uncertainty and may lead to positions being opened or closed at unintended price levels, increasing the risk of losses, particularly when trading leveraged products such as CFDs.

European markets operate under different conditions these days. While exchanges such as the DAX and Euro Stoxx remain open, the absence of US participation often results in reduced trading activity and less consistent price formation. US index futures may be closed or only partially available, reducing available price differences. This may increase pricing uncertainty and lead to orders being executed at prices that differ from expectations, increasing trading costs and potential losses, particularly in leveraged products such as CFDs.

At the same time, European markets may appear stable during periods of reduced US participation, with price movements changing abruptly once US trading resumes Positions exposed to US market flows may therefore experience sudden price adjustments. In foreign exchange markets, such as EUR/USD, liquidity generally remains available, but price behavior may differ from typical trading days and orders may be executed at levels that differ from expected prices, increasing the risk of losses, particularly in leveraged products such as CFDs.

Overall, trading sessions during US holidays typically display lower participation and less stable price dynamics compared to regular market conditions. As full market participation resumes, liquidity and price continuity generally return to levels more consistent with typical trading sessions.
